Brief comments
The Umeda is always busy with an enormous number of businesspeople, shoppers, and students passing through. The underground level is like a labyrinth, so if you ever get lost and don’t have a map handy nor find any information counter, go up to the ground level to reorientate yourself.
Shops
The Umeda boasts a lot of department stores and shopping complexes. They each compete to differentiate themselves from the other stores. We introduce a few of the stores and complexes below, with our personal recommendations for each.
Daimaru Department Store
大丸百貨店
This is the nearest department store to the JR Train Osaka station.
The ladies’ shoes floor (3F) has a great selection of footwear, while Pokémon Center Osaka and One Piece Mugiwara Shop (both 13F) are beloved by kids and adult manga fans. Tokyu Hands (10F‐12F) provides a selection of lifestyle items, stationary, and seasonal goods; some of them might make for some nice souvenirs! As for shops that specialize in cakes and sweets (B1F), Shotani (ショウタニ), Tsumagari (ツマガリ), and Baby Mon Cher (ベビーモンシェール) all started in Osaka or Hyogo prefecture, and have remained popular with locals.
LUCUA & LUCUA 1100
ルクア & ルクアイーレ
If you love dressing up, you must count the shops here among your favorites.
LUCUA 1100
Tsutaya Books (蔦屋書店, 9F) and some cafes including Starbucks Coffee collaborate to produce a comfortable space for reading books. More than 10,000 cosmetic items are available at @cosme store (アットコスメストア, 3F). Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten (中川政七商店) established in Nara in 1716, is a popular shop for linen products (7F).
LUCUA
Graniph (グラニフ, 8F) carries a variety of T-shirts and clothing with a Japanese motif. Chusen Tenugui Nijiyura (注染手ぬぐい にじゆら,9F) sells traditional cotton cloth made in Sakai City, Osaka.
Grant Front Osaka
グランフロント大阪
In additiona to a wide variety of shops, the Grand Front Osaka also offers a “Knowledge Capital” that showcases new concepts, hobbies, and lifestyles based on the latest Japanese technology.
The Suntory Whiskey House (North Bldg., 2F) offers a dining and bar area together with a gallery illustrating the history of the Suntory beverage company. Gravity Research (North Bldg., 6F) is a bouldering gym for both beginners and professionals. This gym is managed by Koujitsusanso (好日山荘, North Bldg., 5F), a mountain-climbing and hiking goods store. The Kinki University Fisheries Restaurant (近畿大学水産研究所, North Bldg., 6F) offers local food from Wakayama prefecture, as well as “Kindai Maguro” (a famous brand of tuna) that is completely aqua cultured using fish-farm technology first developed by Kinki University.
Hankyu Department Store
阪急百貨店
We recommend the Hankyu Department Store, which has the top sales of any department store in western Japan, for several reasons. First, the complex offers an incredible number of items for sale (in particular, jewelry, accessories, cosmetics, clothing, shoes, bags, etc.); You will no doubt find a new favorite shop or item here.
Secondly, for its fascinating architecture alone, the Hankyu Department Store is worth a visit. The Festival Plaza on the 9th floor of the complex is a giant hall with a grand staircase. Exciting events are often held here. Further, the Hankyu Department Store sometimes showcases collaborations with artists, Japanese animated series, and children's books. These showcases commonly result in increased popularity with customers.
The third reason for visiting the Hankyu Department Store is the underground food floor (B1F), also known as the "Depachika" (デパ地下) (literally, “underground department store”). Hankyu’s Depachika offers delicious dishes, sweets, breads, and fresh foods. The shops selling these items are sometimes the only one of their kind in Kansai. Items limited for sale in only Hankyu Department Store can also be found here. The stores FOUNDRY (ファウンドリー), Baton D'or (バトンドール), and Gokan (五感) are our personal recommendations.
Hanshin Department Store
阪神百貨店
Hanshin Department Store has been beloved by locals since 1933 and made a grand opening with new spacy floors in 2021. In our personal opinion, the best thing about this complex is the friendliness of the store clerks, who are knowledgeable about the items. Some of the clerks are also very active on SNS, where they introduce interesting lifestyle-related items, tasty foods, and seasonal fashions.
The Sashimi and Sushi shop "Hanshin Higesada” (阪神髭定, はんしんひげさだ, B1F) sells fresh fish sourced only from selected ports such as Kishiwada port and Akashi port. A direct transport system from these ports enables the shop to offer customers the freshest, tastiest fish! A variety of appetizers or snacks, including a famous local food Ikayaki (イカ焼き) are available on B1F, too.
Wagashi (和菓子), i.e., Japanese sweets, offered by the confectionery store Taneya (たねや, B1F) are delicious! At Taneya, customers can buy Hanshin-brand Dorayaki (kanji: どら焼き; hiragana:どらやき), which is a dessert made of a sweet red bean paste sandwiched between two sponge cakes.
Food
Most department stores and shopping complexes have separate floors for restaurants and cafés.
You can choose something to eat from a variety of selections - not just Japanese food, but also Italian, French, Chinese, Korean, multinational, etc.
At lunchtime on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, these restaurants are very crowded with customers. If the restaurant is very popular, you may have to wait for 1 hour or more! To save time, you can make a reservation online, or sign your name on the waiting lists most of these restaurants have at their front entrance.
If you want to eat an expensive dish such as Sushi, Unagi (grilled eel), Sukiyaki (beef and vegetables simmered in a soy sauce-based broth), or Shabushabu (thinly sliced pork served with a hot broth for dipping), the set menus offered only at lunchtime are generally cheaper than the same foods offered during a dinner course.
Sightseeing
Umeda Sky Building
In 2008, the Umeda Sky Building was selected as one of the top 20 buildings in the world by The Times, a London-based daily newspaper. When visiting the Sky Walk on the top floor, you can enjoy a 360° view of Osaka, and feel a comfortable breeze!
HEP FIVE
This shopping complex is one of Umeda’s most symbolic spots and showcases a giant red Ferris wheel at the top of the building.
